We are conducting a study to understand the effect of interaction technique representations in VR. In this 30-45 minute study, you will be selecting targets in VR using various techniques, using your own VR headset and controllers. You can do this study on your own, in your own time. You will receive a $15 Amazon e-gift card for your participation.
We are looking for right-handed participants, running SteamVR on Windows, with a VR headset (HTC Vive or Vive Pro with Vive controllers, Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift S, or Oculus Quest with Oculus Link set up). You may not participate in this study more than once.
The data collected in this study is anonymized, and may be used only for the purposes associated with teaching, scientific presentations, publications, and/or sharing with other researchers. The data that will be shared will not contain any information that could be used to identify you. Results from this study will be used to inform the design of future interaction techniques. This study has been approved by the University of Waterloo’s research ethics committee.
You are invited to participate in a research study examining methods for people to interact with computers and other digital devices. In this experiment, you will wear a Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) headset to complete tasks such as playing games, building 3D models, manipulating photos, or drawing. This is important because understanding the characteristics and performance of human-computer interaction can discover new interaction methods and improve existing interaction methods. The results of this study contribute to graduate theses and faculty research.
Participation will consist of a 45-minute session. During a session, you will be asked to use one or more AR/VR applications for a set amount of time or until a condition is met (such as achieving a certain level in a game, completing a target 3D model, or completing a set of photo manipulation tasks). You may be asked to use the application while standing or when seated, and the application interfaces may require you to move your body or change your position. You may also need to hold and use hand-held controllers, devices like a tablet or phone, or real objects like a book. In addition you may need to move your hands in mid-air to manipulate objects or issue commands with hand gestures. You may also be interacting with an experimenter during the session using a remote conferencing system.

In order to participate in the study: you must have full use of both of your hands and feet; if you wear eyeglasses, check with the experimenter to verify they will fit inside the device (using contact lenses is fine). You should consider not participating if you have the following: ear infection in the last year; commonly experience motion sickness or nausea when riding in a car, train, or bus; diagnosis of a disease of the middle ear such as Meniere’s disease; or trouble maintaining balance in everyday life such as walking around campus, walking around home, etc.
